At The Kicking System, we believe that big results come from mastering the small details. It’s a philosophy we bring to every training session, and it was on full display this week during a fantastic private lesson with Dean, a promising kicker from Torrey Pines High School.
Dean came in ready to work, and we focused the session on the absolute cornerstones of elite kicking: the fundamentals. We dedicated our time to refining his technique on both field goals and kickoffs, ensuring that every movement was efficient, repeatable, and powerful.
Deconstructing the Kick: The TKS Method
With Coach Matich leading the instruction, we immediately zeroed in on the three most critical components of the kicking motion:
- The Steps: We started by calibrating Dean’s approach. Consistent steps are the foundation of a consistent kick. We worked to ensure his path to the ball was identical every single time, eliminating any extra variables before the swing even began.
- The Plant Foot: Next, we focused on his plant foot, arguably the most important part of the kick. We drilled the proper placement and stability, ensuring he was generating power from the ground up and maintaining perfect balance through contact.
- The Leg Lock: Finally, we put it all together with his leg lock. By ensuring his ankle and knee were properly locked at the point of impact, Dean was able to transfer all the energy from his swing directly into the ball, creating a more powerful and predictable flight path.
The Results: Immediate Improvement and a Bright Future
The results were immediate and impressive. Dean responded incredibly well to the coaching, absorbing the information like a sponge. As we progressed through the session, his ball contact became noticeably more consistent. The kicks weren’t just going through the uprights; they were flying with a cleaner rotation and a more powerful, predictable trajectory.
It was clear that Dean learned a ton from Coach Matich, and he left the session not just as a better kicker, but as a smarter one. He now has the tools and the understanding to self-correct and continue building on this strong foundation.
We are incredibly excited to follow Dean’s progress this season at Torrey Pines. With his work ethic and a renewed focus on the fundamentals, he has a very bright future ahead of him. Great work, Dean!
