Lessons from U.S. U-20 Team’s World Cup Journey

2–3 minutes

As a coach, and especially as a former kicker, I get fired up watching athletes execute under pressure. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 50-yard field goal to win the game or a free kick on the world stage—the core principles are the same: technique, mental toughness, and unwavering trust in your preparation.

Right now, we’re seeing a masterclass in these principles from our own U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team at the World Cup in Chile. Their recent 3-0 demolition of a powerhouse like Italy to advance to the quarterfinals wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. And for any young athlete, especially those in specialized positions like kicking, there are some huge takeaways.

The “Set Piece” Moment of Truth

Let’s talk about that second goal against Italy. With the game at 1-0, the U.S. earned a free kick. The pressure is on. This is the moment that can either seal the momentum or let the opponent back in the game. It’s the equivalent of lining up for a kick to go up by two scores.

Midfielder Niko Tsakiris stepped up and delivered a “brilliant” free kick, bending it perfectly around the wall and into the net. He didn’t just kick the ball; he executed a highly technical skill under immense pressure. He trusted his process, picked his spot, and let his training take over. That’s the mindset we preach every single day at The Kicking System. You don’t rise to the occasion; you fall back on the foundation of your training.

Consistency is King

Look at the team’s leaders. Captain Benjamin Cremaschi has been a rock, scoring two goals in the Italy match. Goalkeeper Adam Beaudry has earned two clean sheets in the tournament. They, along with Josh Wynder, are the only players to have started every single match.

What does that tell you? They are reliable. Dependable. Consistent.

For a kicker or a punter, being the most consistent and reliable person on the field is your number one job. It’s not always about the spectacular 60-yarder; it’s about making the routine feel routine, every single time. This U-20 team is showing that consistency, from your goalkeeper to your captain, is the backbone of success.

The Future is Bright

This team, with 16 of its 21 players coming from MLS clubs, is a testament to the growth of youth development in our country. They are playing with confidence, skill, and a tactical discipline that is incredible to watch.

As they prepare for their quarterfinal match this Sunday, October 12, they’re not just playing for a trophy. They’re showing every young athlete in America what’s possible when you dedicate yourself to your craft and, most importantly, when you learn to trust yourself in the moments that matter most.

Let’s get behind them!
