La Jolla Country Day Kicker Verbally Commits to Stanford

The Kicking System Facilitates Travis Golia’s Success

SAN DIEGO, November 14, 2007—The Kicking System, which provides kicking instruction to football place-kickers and punters, announced today that Travis Golia, one of its clients, has made a verbal commitment to attend Stanford University next fall. A senior at La Jolla Country Day, Golia began working with John Matich, owner of The Kicking System, prior to his junior year.

“Travis has worked hard to become a consistent and powerful kicker,” Matich said. “I helped him with his technique, but his abilities really put him on the recruiting map.”

Golia’s kicking prowess and academic achievements resulted in him being offered spots on teams at two Ivy League schools, and he was also highly recruited by USC, but Stanford was always his number-one choice. Matich accompanied Golia on a trip to Palo Alto to check out the campus and attend a Stanford-Oregon State football game.

“When I started working with John I was just a raw talent. He helped me perfect my technique to add distance and accuracy. Without coaching, I wouldn’t have reached my potential,” Golia said. “John also helped me get noticed due to his connections throughout college football.”

Golia’s father, Dave, also credits Matich with being an absolute key to his son’s success. He noted that Matich is both a very good teacher and an excellent mentor with respect to the recruitment process.

“Travis was contacted by more than 50 schools, and while our heads were spinning, John was calm, drawing from his experience as both a recruited player and a veteran of working with other athletes,” the senior Golia said. “He provided steady guidance, on and off the field, and I’m not sure we could have done this without him.”
